and Andrea Wilsworth, a nice but secretive couple, have just moved to the town of Franklin — one of many recent moves — and have settled in to watch I Love Lucy after a day of un-packing. Insurance adjuster Jim Burlingame just wants to leave work and maybe have a drink, but instead he’s packing a bag and driving to Franklin at the request of his boss and an armed man with several loose screws.

I Love Lucy episode ‘The Marriage License’ is seen by 10 million Americans. In it Lucy, cleaning but unable to throw out sentimental items, finds their marriage license and discovers that Ricky’s last name is misspelled Bacardi, not Ricardo, and she begins to believe their marriage isn’t legal.

“ — suppose there is a Ricky Bicardi. For all I know I might be married to a rum factory!”

“Look, all I know is it’s not technically just property damage, it’s also property theft at this point. OK? No — no, I’m the insurance guy. No, I can’t hold. This is long distance and Ma Bell is charging me a fortune. I’ll call back again tomorrow.”

Burlingame dropped the receiver on the cradle and slumped back in his chair. Insurance. Why the hell did he ever think insurance was going to be anything but drudgery.

There were more boxes than she remembered. But wasn’t that always the way? Still, there was a sort of reward in the packing and un-packing; Small treasures, forgotten for a while, are found once more and beg you to look at them, hold them, and remember their place in your life and memories, before gently folding them in crinkled newspaper and placing them into a box. In that crumpled bed of past events and supermarket ads, they’ll patiently wait for you.

The trunk smelled like gasoline, dirt and piss. He wished he could close his nose to the smell, but with the rag wedged in his mouth and tied around his head, he needed it to breathe. The only light in the big metal cavern came from the back-side of the tail lights where they poked through the body, glowing brighter as the car slowed, but seemingly never stopping, or blinking as they turned.
